Here is the Tourism Development Strategy for Koroška - sustainable, authentic!
Last Friday, July 4, 2025, the Koroška Regional Council adopted the Tourism Development Strategy for the Koroška Destination 2025–2030, an important strategic document that will guide the further development of tourism in Koroška - Koroška will be recognized as a leading sustainable destination, where unspoiled nature, rich cultural heritage, and hospitable local communities intertwine in harmonious coexistence.
The strategy is based on a comprehensive analysis of the current state of tourism, carried out in the first phase of the strategic process, and the inclusion of opinions, experiences and views of key stakeholders in the region. The analysis showed that the region records around 140,000 overnight stays annually, with domestic visitors prevailing, while visitors from neighbouring countries stand out among foreigners. Both the local population and business entities assess tourism as a positive opportunity for the development of the region. The region has great potential for the development of a boutique, sustainable and year-round tourist offer, based on rich natural resources, technical and cultural heritage and the authenticity of the space. However, it also faces challenges such as poor transport accessibility, fragmented offer, lack of staff and insufficient cooperation between actors. Stakeholders therefore emphasize the need for greater professional support, better networking and coordinated development of tourism at the level of the entire region.
The vision of developing Koroška as a recognizable, boutique and year-round destination with high added value is realized through a mission based on the development of sustainable and authentic tourism. This tourism connects natural resources, rich cultural heritage and the local community, thereby contributing to the well-being of residents and creating unforgettable experiences for visitors.
The strategy defines specific qualitative and quantitative goals: increasing tourist overnight stays and arrivals, increasing the average annual occupancy rate, the share of foreign guests, the length of stay, developing new products, deseasonalization... The emphasis is on the development of boutique products, sustainable infrastructure, digitalization and training of personnel, and cooperation between stakeholders and the local population. In accordance with modern approaches to strategic management of tourist destinations, stakeholder cooperation is one of the most important factors in the success of strategic directions, as it enables the coordination of interests, the legitimacy of measures and the long-term acceptance of the development vision.
Through seven strategic areas (organization and management, marketing, data-based decision-making, quality, infrastructure and investments, sustainability, high added value) and strategic approaches, the strategy thoroughly defines numerous goals, policies and measures, making it not just a program document, but a common guideline for the coordinated and long-term operation of all tourism stakeholders for the benefit of visitors, the local population and the sustainable development of the region.
