At RRA Koroška, we are proud that we can strengthen both the mobility of the local population and the competitiveness of Koroška as a tourist destination through various projects!
The region's integrated transport strategy was presented by Peter Zajc, M.A., project manager at the RRA Koroška, who was heavily involved in the development of the strategic document. He says: "The Koroška region is the first development region in Slovenia to have a so-called regional integrated transport strategy (RCPS) prepared in accordance with the Integrated Transport Planning Act (ZCPN). The document was approved by all 12 municipal councils, and the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy also gave its consent."
The RCM Koroška also operates under the auspices of the RRA Koroška. The activities within the Regional Mobility Centre were presented by the project manager at the RRA Koroška, Aleš Rupreht, who said: "The Regional Mobility Centre Koroška brings together all key areas of sustainable mobility under one roof, which allows us to now also at the regional level to take a more efficient and strategic approach to regulating issues in this area and become a connecting entity between the national and local levels. In this way, we can offer municipalities effective support and develop joint cooperation for the benefit of all residents."
Uroš Rozman, director of the Regional Development Agency for Koroška doo, continued by speaking on the topic of building a national cycling network, where the Agreement for the Development of the Region will provide for 10 km of new cycling connections between Dravograd and Muto and a new footbridge at the Kovtro Bridge. As part of the reconstruction of the national road between Črna na Koroškem and Mežica and between Ravne na Koroškem and Dobrije, the region will receive an additional 7 km of cycling connections in the Mežica Valley. As an upgrade, if the application is successful in the tender in 2026, they want to establish a Regional e-bike rental system in 7 municipalities of the Koroška region, which is of strategic importance for the sustainable development of the region.
The long-standing successful partnership with the Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark and cross-border cooperation has brought another good cooperation, which is in full swing and is brought about by the Connect2tourism project, which was presented by Peter Zajc during the press conference. It is a project whose starting point is a new railway connection and cross-border solutions for sustainable mobility - new opportunities based on the tourist and cultural potential of the common region for economic development.
We concluded with one of the most attractive tourist products in Koroška at the moment – the Štrekna cycling trail. It attracts many tourists from near and far. Aleš Rupreht emphasized that this also brings many challenges. In the future, preventive measures will be implemented to raise awareness among the public and visitors about the rules of conduct for cyclists, coexistence, mutual respect and care for more vulnerable groups. They make an appeal for tolerance: "Let's be responsible and respectful of each other!"
Aleš Rupreht also presented what the future holds for the Štrekna bus, which has proven to be very popular in recent years. He said: "Last year, the popular Štrekna bus service also had to face the new reality of Štrekna - an extremely increased demand, which unfortunately outgrew the capacity of this bicycle bus, as users regularly warned us about. Therefore, together with key stakeholders within the TRANS-BORDERS+ project, we have upgraded the service for this season, which will be available daily in July and August this year, and the issue of difficult bicycle transportation will also be resolved with a new, more modern trailer."
Statement by director Uroš Rozman: "We are proud that through various projects we can strengthen both the mobility of the local population and the competitiveness of Koroška as a tourist destination. The green transition is no longer the future - it is here and now, and Koroška is actively involved in it."
